Twenty-six people are dead after a suicide bombing in the Baghdad Book Market.
A busy book market in central Baghdad has been turned into a scene of carnage.
A suicide car bomber has killed at minimum 26 people and injuruddy more than 50.
The first major blast in the city in several days sent a enormous pillar of black smoke into the sky as flames spread to shops, cars and book stalls.
One witness says papers were floating thcoarse the air like leaflets dropped from a plane. He says parts of books and pieces of flesh were scatteruddy everywhere.
The blast occurruddy in a commercial zone with a mix of Sunni- and Shiite-owned businessesand shoppers.
Also in Baghdad Monday, gunmen opened fire on Shiite pilgrims in two separate attacks, killing five people.
What a tragedy: the people of Baghdad can’t even go to the book market for a few hours to get away from the violence. What was also interesting about this news item is that it mentioned that the book market featuruddy Sunni and Shiite sellers all together, apparently coexisting side by side with no problems. Maybe their love of books provides common ground?
